The Tableau Firmware Update (TFU) utility is a dedicated program used to update the firmware on OpenText Tableau Forensic hardware, including write-blockers, bridges, and duplicators like the TX1, TX2, TD4, TD2u, and UltraBay/UltraBlock devices. Keeping these tools updated ensures optimal forensic reliability, legal defensibility of digital evidence, new features, and patch fixes.

Depending on your specific Tableau hardware model, the installation process falls into two distinct categories: updating standalone duplicators via a USB drive or updating bridges and legacy hardware using a Windows PC. Method 1: Standalone Hardware (TD4, TX1, TX2)

Devices like the Tableau Forensic TD4 Duplicator or TX1/TX2 Imagers do not need to be physically tethered to a PC during the actual update. They are flashed via external media.

Verify Version: Navigate to your device’s home screen, open the Side Navigation menu, tap About, and note your current firmware version.

Download Package: Go to the official OpenText Tableau Download Center or an approved mirror like Digital Intelligence. Download the matching .tx1_pkg, .tx2_pkg, or .td4_pkg file.

Prepare Media: Format a USB thumb drive (or SD card for the TX1) to FAT32. Move the downloaded package file directly to the root directory.

Insert Media: Turn the device off completely. Insert the flash drive into the rear USB accessory port (or the SD slot for the TX1) and power the unit back on.

Execute Update: Tap the About tile on the screen, select Update Firmware, and target your external media. Select the firmware package file to begin the sequence.

Reboot: Do not unplug the media or power down during this phase. The device will apply the firmware, verify the installation, and automatically restart.

Method 2: Connected Hardware & Legacy Bridges (TD2u, T8u, T35u, UltraBay)

Bridges, write-blockers, and older legacy hardware must be connected to a host computer running Windows to receive updates via the desktop update application.

Install TFU Utility: Download and install the latest Windows installer (.msi) for the Tableau Firmware Update utility on your PC.

Connect Device: Power down your hardware unit. Plug it into your computer using the designated USB update port (usually a mini-USB or micro-USB port distinct from the data ports).

Enter Update Mode: Some hardware modules (like the T35u) feature a manual Firmware Update button. Hold or toggle this option to place the bridge into its flashing state. Turn the unit on.

Run Utility: Open the TFU desktop application. The tool will scan the system, detect connected Tableau devices, and automatically match them against its internal database.

Apply Flash: Devices requiring updates will be highlighted in yellow. Click Update and confirm the prompt.

Confirm Status: Monitor the progress bar. Once done, the device status will turn green to signal a successful write. Close the software and disconnect your hardware. ⚠️ Critical Troubleshooting & Notes Tableau Forensic Firmware Revision History | OpenText
